International Typographic Style Wikipedia

We have articles that address both the professionals and the beginners, as well as those looking for a dramatic career change. If you liked this article about Swiss design, you should check out this article about what is color theory. While Swiss design doesn’t handcuff you to specific hues, it’s known for using color strategically, not decoratively. The design universe orbits around principles of clarity, precision, and stripping down to the bare essentials.

International Typographic Style

It also alludes to the contrasting emotions surrounding joy and how joy is experienced through such distinctions. Seeking to raise awareness of how people with disabilities are rarely considered by major brands when developing sports and outdoor clothing, Tabea Wschiansky is on a mission to disrupt the sector. Designing solutions that marry desirable aesthetics with adaptable functionalities, the visionary creative has conceived Para — a rain cover for people in wheelchairs, allowing them to enjoy the outdoors in style. Designed to be easy to use even with limited mobility, the cover also has a leg protector, which can be folded into a small package and taken with you to be used as and when needed. Helping people in wheelchairs to dress optimally for outdoor activities, Para also allows them to do so independently without the help of others.

Graphic design, 1945–75

International Typographic Style found its niche in this communicative climate and expanded further beyond Switzerland, to America. One characteristic of the International Typographic Style that's hard to miss is the use of Swiss Typography, specially Akzidenz Grotesk, Folio, Helvetica, and Univers. Serif fonts were deemed too expressive, so sans serif fonts were an unobtrusive font that did the most important job—communicate clearly. By World War II, many artists and designers decided to take refuge in Switzerland as it remained neutral in the conflicts of that era.

Minimalism and Clarity

“Motion graphics” are kinetic graphic designs for film titles and television that occur in the fourth dimension—time. A variety of animated film techniques were applied to motion-picture titling in the 1950s by Saul Bass and, in Canada, by Norman McLaren of the Canadian National Film Board. One of the most influential Swiss designers was Josef Müller-Brockmann, who was famous for his work in poster design. He believed that posters should be simple, clear, and easy to read from a distance. His designs often featured sans-serif typefaces, grid systems, and bold, contrasting colors.

This specific series focuses on the feeling of the music, and he used visual graphics to translate music through rhythm, repetition and scale. His compositions very much adhered to the grid to organize elements and to make it easier for the audience to read the message. Müller-Brockmann's work is dynamic and asymmetrical, even though it's constructed on a rigid grid. Armin Hofmann is one of the main pioneers of the Swiss Style who studied under Ernst Keller. Many of his posters included striking black and white photography with high contrast.

The minimal design allows for your content to shine, so pair it with a strong sans serif font and you'll be on trend. After all these decades, grids have prevailed, and it's a method still used by print and web designers to create organized and balanced design systems. The common denominator of these styles is the use of simple geometric shapes and sans serif typography with very unusual placements. The purpose was to design a sans serif type that was stripped down from unnecessary adornments. Its simple and neutral design influenced future Swiss typography in the 1950s, with typefaces like Helvetica, Folio, and Univers. Swiss Design rejected all of the above by embracing modernity, highlighting clarity, and making the designer an anonymous vessel for communication.

Constructivism was an art/architectural philosophy that emerged from Russia in the 1920s. The style develops by assorted mechanical objects that are combined into abstract mobile structural forms. Hallmarks of the movement include geometric reduction, photo-montage and simplified palettes. De Stijl was a Dutch artistic movement that saw prominence in the period between 1917 and 1931.[19] Referred to as neoplasticism, this artistic strategy sought to reflect a new Utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order. It was a form of pure abstraction through reduction to the essentials of form and colour, employing vertical and horizontal layouts using only black and white and primary colors. Proponents of this movement included painters like Piet Mondrian, Vilmos Huszar and Bart van der Leck as well as architects like Gerrit Rietveld, Robert van 't Hoff and J.

"Artecraft is a space that makes the education of contemporary art accessible for more people. "It is a space where people can attend lectures, events and workshops – Each room uses a specific set of carefully curated materials that work in harmony to create a coherent aesthetic throughout the building." "The three-year programme offers intensive curriculum teaching on various aspects of interior design to acquire advanced skills and knowledge and develop professional practitioners within the international design community.

Swiss Style: The Principles, the Typefaces & the Designers

It brought the grid system into play, emphasizing simplicity, readability, and objectivity in layouts. It’s like watching evolution in real-time, with grid systems and typography precision making the digital realm nothing short of extraordinary. From modular grids to functional design, Swiss principles have permeated creative spheres, guiding my hand as a web designer shaping pixels with purpose. It resulted from the unique contributions of specific artists and designers whom we’ll look at here. Swiss Design rejects such attempts to replicate the crafts of a pre-industrial society and to privilege the subjectivity of the artist.

These designs acted as independent visual/verbal statements about such topics as assassinations and civil rights. Storch believed concept, text, type, and image should be inseparable in editorial design, and he applied this belief to the editorial pages of McCall’s. Swiss designers varied the size of type to generate a greater visual impact and also to hint at the hierarchy of information. They used a scale of size in their type to control flow through their design and create rhythm within it. Communication through objective simplicity was a guiding principle of Swiss Design. They attempted to remove all that was unnecessary and emphasize only the necessary.

Much of what we consider the fundamental principles of design arose from Swiss design and the movements that influenced it. While aesthetic styles have certainly come and gone, the guiding principles of Swiss design have never left us and have served as the foundation for graphic design ever since. Swiss design quickly gained popularity in Europe and beyond, and had a significant impact on the design world. Its influence can be seen in everything from graphic design and advertising to product design and architecture. This progressive, radical movement in graphic design is not concerned with the graphic design in Switzerland, but rather with the new style that had been proposed, attacked and defended in the 1920s in Switzerland. You’ve probably seen the influence of Swiss Style, whether you’ve realized it or not.

Weingart’s work has had a lasting impact on the field of typography and has inspired many designers to push the limits of what is possible in design. Another Swiss designer who made a significant contribution to the field was Armin Hofmann. Hofmann was a student of Müller-Brockmann and became one of the leading figures of the International Typographic Style. His work is characterized by his use of simple geometric forms, bold typography, and the innovative use of negative space. His work for the Basel School of Design is considered a classic example of Swiss design.

Another example of Swiss design in the EU is the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) logo, which was designed by Swiss graphic designer Hans Hartmann in 1932. The logo’s iconic and timeless design, featuring a simple and bold monogram of the letters “SBB,” has remained virtually unchanged for nearly a century. The use of a sans-serif typeface, strong geometric shapes, and a monochromatic color scheme are all characteristic of Swiss design, and have helped to establish SBB as a recognizable and trustworthy brand in the transportation industry. Swiss design emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as a distinctive graphic design style that was characterized by clean lines, simplicity, and clarity. It was a reaction against the ornate, decorative styles that had dominated design in the early 20th century.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

The staff was super friendly and helpful and really went out of their way for us. The restaurant was great and you are a short dinghy ride to town on the other side of the canal. No showers, laundry or grocery nearby. Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

Kids menu,

Steve, the Dockmaster, went out of his way to make sure we had a great stay. We will definitely stop here again. Nice for a quick stop especially with the shoaling at the entrance to the Anchorage across the canal. Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. A little crazy on a holiday but the staff is great and works hard. We will definitely add Schaefer's to our 'must return' list.

Wheelchair accessible seating,

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

The available amenities of the docks, which are located outside of a restaurant and bar, are noted on the Snag-A-Slip profile. The marina does offer restrooms, but a bath house is not an available amenity. This is a good location to stop in preparation to head down the C&D canal, and Delaware River.

Staff required to disinfect surfaces between visits,

I contacted the Dockmaster and he called me when the Canal was open to traffic. My only complaint has nothing to do with the marina. The restaurant has gone downhill. My guess is they have a new chef. It was prime rib ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Then got chicken parmigiana.

Vegetarian options,

Always awkward if seen as a complainer. The owner and his son were polite and the facility was a perfect stopover. Very good prices at the dock and restaurant. On our way from Cape May to Baltimore. Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant.

Again, great docking support. The restaurant had a live band and the food was excellent. Very pleasant stay and great stop between Cape May and Annapolis.

The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements. Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night. Great food at the restaurant. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Lively place with live music over the weekend.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff).

Location much quieter than Chesapeake Inn. Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock hands were very helpful ,especially with their current and friendly.

Great stay at Schaefer's marina. Stopped at the fuel dock and took on 750 gallons of fuel. Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

Dock hands are very helpful. We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you.

After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal.

Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant. Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend.

Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise. Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. This is a great place to stay.

Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. And cracking jokes the whole time. We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. Definitely would come back. We had a really good experience here.

The onsite restaurant was very good. Live music was enjoyable without being too loud. Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. We are docked from May1st to Oct31st on the transit floating docks. Our vessel is definately in good hands with Dockmaster Tom & Manager Steven Connell. They are able to run this top notch facility because of the knowledgable & friendly deckhands.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

Much enjoyed the large bar/restaurant - good food and service. This is a restaurant with a dock that accepts transients, not a true marina. Note that they have fuel (gas and diesel), but no other amenities for transients (no pump-out/showers/laundry/after-hours toilets etc.). Those would be welcome additions that could lead to longer stays.

Happy hour food,

The band continued after we went back on board, and it added to our cocktails on the flybridge. Schaffer's is a desirable destination, not just a great marina and restaurant. Beautiful view of a competitor across the Canal, too. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic.

For Boaters

A little noisier than most places due to the bridge traffic and the restaurant but not bad. Good and pleasant dock help (Olivia). A 2-3 knot current with an easy approach.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

Note that the dock has no cleats to which you can tie, you'll need to throw a clove hitch or something around the pilings. The dock hands are quite good about helping with line handling. Steven the Dock Master was amazing. He's very knowledgeable and even washed the water marks and filled our fenders when we got fuel.

Nice location with the restaurant and the dockmaster hours were very convenient for our 5p arrival. Only suggestion is to add showers to the facility. Please provide your ETA, if you will be needing fuel, and direction of approach in the Notes section at checkout. Note that the marina has both fixed and floating docks on site, however the floating docks do not offer shore power. A band was playing, dinner was being served along the docks, and after a quick shower on board, dinner on the dock was fantastic!

Staff required to disinfect surfaces between visits,

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night. Restaurant is good and convenient. Currents not a significant issue when taken bow first. Marina staff is very knowledgeable on currents and did a great job of securing the boat for an overnight stay. Will be using the Marina on my return trip.

Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal. Easy access to water hose and electric hookup.

The restaurant does have special menus for holidays, as well as an amazing event space, perfect for hosting your next big shindig. The beautiful veranda that overlooks the creek gives guests a quiet spot to catch up on some serious R&R. Staff was excellent from the time I hit the Fuel dock, until I was down the pier at my slip. Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats.

Please note fuel dock is being renovating and will not be available until May. Schaefer's Canal House menu has been digitised by Sirved. The menu for Schaefer's Canal House may have changed since the last user update. Sirved does not guarantee prices or the availability of menu items. Dock crew were very accommodating.

I would definitely stay there again. Nice people and the dock hands do a great job. I recommend using this marina when passing thru the C & D Canal.

Great experience on the C and D canal. The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained.

Great watching canal traffic. Be aware there are no showers or local stores. Current runs strong up to 2.5 knots. Great help from Dockmaster and dockhand. The Army Corp had actually closed the C&D Canal due to fog.

I believe this is the only marina in Chesapeake City that has fuel. Since the main dockage is along a fixed dock it's fairly easy to pull up and the dockmaster is very helpful and friendly. I ate at the restaurant (nothing else around) the food is good. There aren't any showers, but I didn't find that to be an issue.

Nice location and great staff. The restaurant was good and reasonably priced. Strong currents can be expected. We really enjoyed the bar and restaurant.
